Fleet Pond
Fleet Pond Local Nature Reserve is located on the northern edge
of the town of Fleet, North-east Hampshire.
The total reserve area of 57 hectares (141 acres) is designated
a Local Nature Reserve. Within this, 48 hectares (118.5 acres)
is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The
Pond, at 21 hectares (52 acres), is Hampshire’s largest
freshwater lake.
In 1954, Fleet Pond was one of the first nature reserves to be
notified SSSI under the 1949 Act. SSSI status was renotified,
with amended boundaries, in 1984 (under the Wildlife &
Countryside Act 1981). The SSSI area includes the lake, reedbeds,
fens and the dry heathland area to the east, including the
heathy islands in the car park.
The site is owned by Hart District Council. It is managed by
Hart District Council’s Countryside Service in partnership with
Fleet Pond Society, a registered charity.
